Chinese Activist Who Documented Uyghur Camps Faces Possible Removal from U.S.

Guan Heng, a Chinese national who filmed alleged human rights abuses against Uyghurs in China, faces potential removal from the United States following his detention by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in August, according to The Guardian.
Guan, 38, left China after publishing a 20-minute video documenting his visits to sites in Xinjiang identified as detention facilities for Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities. Beijing has denied allegations of mass detentions, asserting its policies target extremism and promote economic development, while the United Nations has described the treatment of Uyghurs as potentially constituting crimes against humanity.
Guan underwent an immigration hearing in New York on 15 December, with the next session scheduled for January. Authorities may consider sending him to Uganda, which has agreed to accept certain deportees, though his legal team is challenging this option due to the risk of eventual return to China.
Supporters note that family members of Guan in China have faced questioning following the video’s release. Guan is currently held at a Broome County facility in upstate New York. Human rights groups have highlighted the high risk of persecution he would face if returned to China, calling for protective measures to allow him to remain in a safe country.
