The United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has held the Nigerian government responsible for “serious and systematic” violations of the rights of women and girls in a recent report.

According to Al Jazeera, the report was prepared following a 2023 visit by the committee delegation to several Nigerian states and emphasizes the extensive suffering of survivors of the Chibok schoolgirls’ abduction.

In the April 2014 attack, 276 girls were kidnapped by the extremist Boko Haram group.

Reuters reported that many of the victims were subjected to forced marriage, religious conversion, and physical and sexual violence.

The report states that so far, 103 girls have been released, while the fate of 91 remains unknown.

The UN stressed that Nigeria, as a signatory to the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, is obligated to protect and provide redress for the victims.
