Rights Groups Raise Alarm Over Rising Executions of Afghan Migrants in Iran
———————————————
Human rights organizations report a surge in the executions of Afghan migrants in Iran, sparking international concern about the fairness of trials and the treatment of vulnerable individuals, Khaama Press reported. According to Iranian human rights groups, at least 85 prisoners were executed in Iranian prisons in the month following the Israel-Iran ceasefire.

The Hengaw Human Rights Organization states that six of those executed were Afghan nationals, although their identities and charges remain undisclosed. Among the other executed prisoners were 15 Lur, 12 Turks, 12 Kurds, and six Baluch. Additionally, six individuals were executed on accusations of “spying for Israel,” but it is unclear if any were Afghan.

Hengaw and other rights groups highlight a sharp rise in executions of Afghan citizens in recent years, raising alarm among human rights defenders. Data from Hengaw shows that 40 Afghan nationals were executed in Iran during the first half of 2025, compared to at least 73 in 2024.

Iran’s widespread use of the death penalty, including against Afghan migrants, has drawn strong international criticism. Many executions are related to drug trafficking or political charges, but rights monitors warn that trials often lack transparency and basic legal protections, raising serious concerns about due process.
