Grand Ayatollah Shirazi Urges Scholars to Resist Worldly Temptations and Uphold Sincerity

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Husseini al-Shirazi has urged Islamic scholars and seminary students to maintain sincerity and devotion to God, cautioning against being distracted by worldly temptations. In remarks directed to members of the religious seminaries, he said that a scholar whose heart and mind are attached to material pursuits “would be better off not being a scholar.” His Eminence explained that scholars face two paths—either becoming heirs to the prophets, blessed by the angels, or drifting further away from God.
He stressed that walking the path of piety and sincerity requires strong determination and reliance on God, citing the Qur’anic verse, “When you have resolved, then put your trust in Allah.” The Supreme Marja also called on scholars to seek the intercession of the Prophet’s family and emulate great figures in Islamic scholarship such as Sheikh al-Mufid, Sayyid al-Murtadha, Sayyid al-Radhi, Sheikh al-Tusi, and Sayyid Bahr al-Uloom, emphasizing that knowledge bears fruit only through sincerity and righteous action.
