Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: Weeping for Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) During Prayer is Akin to Weeping Out of Fear of God, Enhancing Reward

In his daily scholarly session, Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq Husseini Shirazi addressed a question regarding the ruling on weeping during prayer. The Supreme Marja stated that, based on narrations, weeping during prayer generally invalidates it, with the exception of weeping out of fear of Almighty God, which is permissible and does not invalidate the prayer.

His Eminence further noted that there is a difference of opinion among jurists regarding weeping over the calamities of Sayyida al-Shuhada Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) during prayer. While some jurists believe that if a worshipper weeps for the calamities of Aba Abdillah al-Hussein (peace be upon him), they receive spiritual reward, their prayer is considered invalid.

However, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi emphasized his own view and that of a group of jurists: “A group of jurists believes that weeping for His Holiness Sayyid al-Shuhada (peace be upon him) during prayer is equivalent to weeping out of fear of Almighty God, and in this case, not only is the prayer not invalidated, but its reward is increased. My own understanding is also this.” This perspective suggests that shedding tears for the suffering of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) during prayer is not only permissible but can also lead to greater spiritual recompense.
