Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: There is Consensus Among Shia Scholars on Integrity of Holy Quran

Another daily scholarly session led by Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq Hosseini Shirazi was held on Friday, the 5th of Shawwal, in his honourable residence. As in previous sessions, the Supreme Marja addressed questions from attendees regarding various jurisprudential issues.

In his remarks concerning the differences between the Tanzil (descent), Tafsir (interpretation), and Tawil (exegesis) of the Holy Quran, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi referenced a narration stating that during the revelation of the Quran, the Angel Gabriel presented the verses to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him and his pure family), while Amir al-Mo’mineen Imam Ali (peace be upon him) would record three additional elements along with the text of Quran: Tanzil, Tafsir, and Tawil.

His Eminence emphasized that these narrations indicate that when Gabriel descended upon the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his pure family) and recited verses, he would inform the Prophet, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, this is the Quran.” After reciting certain parts, Gabriel would clarify, “These are the Tafsir of the Quran,” followed by other sections, stating, “These are the Tawil of the Quran.”

Furthermore, he asserted that there exists a consensus among Shia scholars, from Sheikh Mufid to Sheikh Tusi and up to the present day, that there has been no alteration in the words of the Quran, even at a single point.
