Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: No Distortion in Words of Holy Quran, but Tafsir, Tawil and Context Have Been Distorted
Another daily scholarly session was led by Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Hosseini al-Shirazi in his honourable residence in Qom. As in previous sessions, the Supreme Marja addressed questions from attendees regarding various jurisprudential issues.
In his explanation of verse 9 of Surah Al-Hijr, “We have certainly sent down this Quran, and We will surely guard it,” Grand Ayatollah Shirazi stated: “The promise of Almighty God is solely regarding the preservation of the Holy Quran. God’s will in this matter is exclusively related to the Quran, and He has guaranteed that it will not be altered. No such promise has been made regarding other heavenly books.”
Regarding the possibility of distortion in the Quran, he mentioned: “It is widely accepted among scholars, from Sheikh Mufid and Sheikh Tusi, dating back over a thousand years, that there has been no distortion in the words of the Quran. However, distortions have occurred in interpretation, exegesis, and the context of revelation.”
