Grand Ayatollah Shirazi: First Ghadir Represents Tawalli and Second Ghadir Represents Tabarri

On Friday, the 9th of Rabi al-Awwal, the daily scholarly sessions led by Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sadiq al-Hosseini al-Shirazi continues in his honourable Residence in Qom. As in previous sessions, the Supreme Marja answered attendees’ questions on various jurisprudential issues.

Regarding the significance of the 9th of Rabi al-Awwal being referred to as the Second Ghadir, Grand Ayatollah Shirazi explained that this designation is not related to the first day of the Imamate of Imam al-Mahdi (may Allah hasten his reappearance), which is actually the 8th of Rabi al-Awwal. Instead, this title pertains to an important event that occurred on the 9th of Rabi al-Awwal.

He further elaborated that the title of Second Ghadir is based on a narration from Ahmad ibn Ishaq from Imam al-Hadi (peace be upon him), who quoted Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him). This narration, which is detailed and spans several pages, can be found in “Bihar al-Anwar” and “Jami’ Ahadith al-Shi’a.” Various names for this day are mentioned in the narration, which many jurists have adhered to, and according to it, have issued fatwas in the book “Urwat al-Wuthqa,” its margins, and other jurisprudential texts.

His Eminence emphasized that among the names mentioned in this narration from Amir al-Mu’minin (peace be upon him) is the Second Ghadir. Based on this, Tawalli (love and loyalty) can be derived from the First Ghadir and Tabarri (hate and disavowal) from the Second Ghadir.
