Pope Leo Criticizes Polluting Companies and Warns of Environmental Crisis in Italy

Pope Leo has warned about the consequences of companies prioritizing huge profits over environmental health, describing the trend as a serious threat to land, water, air, and social life.

According to Reuters, the head of the Catholic Church strongly criticized polluting companies during a visit to Acerra in southern Italy, an area known for the illegal dumping of toxic waste. He called for an end to environmental destruction and stressed that the pursuit of power and wealth must not lead to the devastation of natural resources or harm to human communities.

The report said Pope Leo also planned to visit an area near Naples known as the “Land of Fires,” where toxic waste dumping has caused long-term pollution and serious health concerns. The European Court of Human Rights had previously warned about the failure of authorities to protect residents from the dangers of toxic waste in the region.

Pope Leo said the purpose of his visit was to express solidarity with families who lost loved ones to pollution-related illnesses and to draw global attention to growing environmental crises.
