Spike in Islamophobic Attacks: Three Mosques Targeted in France Within Three Days
…………….

France has witnessed a troubling surge in Islamophobic incidents, with three mosques attacked in Mulhouse, Tours, and Millau between August 23 and 25, 2025. These incidents have raised concerns about rising anti-Muslim hostility in the country.

On August 23, a man armed with a knife entered a mosque in Mulhouse during dawn prayers, damaging copies of the Quran and furniture. Although no one was physically harmed, the attack caused significant distress among worshippers. The perpetrator is reportedly known locally and suffers from mental health issues.

The following day, the Grand Mosque in Tours was pelted with stones, breaking a glass facade. This mosque has previously suffered vandalism, including fence uprooting and electrical damage. The mosque administration filed a complaint with support from the political party La France Insoumise (LFI).

On August 25, racist graffiti appeared on the Millau mosque’s facade, featuring a Lorraine cross and a slogan referencing a recent TikTok streamer’s death. A solidarity gathering was held in response. According to France’s Interior Ministry, Islamophobic acts rose by 75% in the first half of 2025 compared to 2024.

Human rights groups warn that political and media rhetoric, especially from far-right factions, fuels this hatred. Islamic organizations urge authorities to treat such crimes with the same severity as other forms of racism to protect religious freedom and social cohesion.
