Rome Petrol Station Blast Injures 29, Sparks Investigation
…………………
At least 29 people, including 10 police officers and a firefighter, were injured in a large explosion at a petrol station in Rome’s Prenestino district on Friday morning. The blast, which followed a truck collision with a pipeline, caused a fire that spread to a nearby depot and damaged surrounding buildings.
Authorities said eight people remain hospitalised, with two in critical condition due to severe burns. Firefighters and ambulance workers were on site before the explosion due to the initial truck incident. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said a gas leak during fuel refilling operations likely caused the fire and explosion.
Images showed the station gutted and flames rising high above the city. A nearby sports centre hosting a youth camp evacuated five children before the blast. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Pope Leo XIV both expressed concern for the victims. Fire crews confirmed the blaze is under control but still burning.
