Firefighting teams in several European countries are continuing efforts to control wildfires that have spread amid an intense heatwave, forcing thousands of residents to leave their homes and raising warnings of continued fire risks in the coming days.

In France, authorities issued warnings over the risk of new fires in several southern departments after around 30 fires were reported in different areas. Nearly 2,000 firefighters are taking part in operations to extinguish the flames and prevent them from spreading further.

The fires forced the evacuation of around 3,000 people from a campsite in Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in southern France after flames reached the surrounding area. Authorities said the evacuation was carried out as a precaution to protect residents and visitors.

In Portugal, firefighters are battling a forest fire that has been burning for more than two days in the north of the country, injuring four people. Three other fires also broke out in the region, with around 1,000 firefighters involved in efforts to bring the blazes under control.

In Spain, more than 200 firefighters are working to contain a large fire near the tourist area of Costa Brava on the Mediterranean coast. Authorities urged residents of 10 municipalities to remain indoors for their safety as firefighting operations continued.

The wildfires come as an exceptional heatwave continues to affect large parts of Europe, raising fears that fires could spread further and pose growing risks to residents, forests, and vegetation in the days ahead.
