UK Leaders Warned of Escalating National Threat From Climate Crisis
…………..
A group of prominent scientists has warned that the UK faces severe climate-related threats to its economy, national security, public health and food systems, The Guardian reported. During what organizers described as a “national emergency briefing” in Westminster, more than 1,000 senior figures from business, government and civil society were invited to hear expert assessments of the risks posed by a rapidly warming climate.
Speakers said decisive action is needed to reduce emissions and strengthen resilience to prevent serious disruption. Kevin Anderson, professor of energy and climate change, said the UK must move rapidly toward fair and deep decarbonization to avoid dangerous temperature rises and potential “chaotic and violent” consequences resulting from delayed action.
Nathalie Seddon, professor of biodiversity at the University of Oxford, stressed that economic stability depends on healthy ecosystems, warning that natural systems protecting the climate are breaking down.
Tim Lenton of the University of Exeter highlighted the possibility of a collapse in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, which he said could leave the UK exposed to extreme winters and full dependence on food imports.
Speakers also emphasized the growing security risks from climate impacts. Retired general Richard Nugee called climate change an “insidious threat,” warning that inadequate infrastructure resilience could leave the UK vulnerable.
