Pope Warns COP30 Leaders That Climate Crisis Is Outpacing Global Action

Pope Leo XIV warned that the climate crisis is accelerating “faster than political will,” urging world leaders at COP30 in Brazil to take decisive action before the opportunity to limit global warming to 1.5°C is lost, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a video message to bishops and cardinals from the Global South gathered in Belem, he said the planet is issuing urgent warnings through intensifying floods, droughts, storms and extreme heat, leaving millions highly vulnerable.

He stressed that the Paris Agreement remains the most reliable framework for stabilizing the global climate but argued its weaknesses stem from political choices rather than flaws in the accord itself. The Pope called for stronger solidarity among nations and increased support for climate-exposed regions, particularly in the Global South.

With COP30 entering its final week, he urged countries to overcome divisions and avoid treating nature as a competitive resource. The absence of the US from the summit has added to disagreements over climate ambition, trade policies and financing.
