Wildfires Burned Over Two Million Acres Across Europe in 2025
————————-
Wildfires fueled by a severe heatwave have burned more than 1 million hectares (over 2.47 million acres) of land across Europe so far this year, marking the highest total since official records began in 2006, Anadolu Agency reported.
According to the latest data from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the total area burned in 2025 has surpassed the yearly records of previous years, with a significant increase occurring in August. The affected regions include Spain and Portugal, which have been battling multiple blazes.
The data indicates that the area burned in Spain has sharply risen in August, reaching approximately 400,000 hectares (about 988,400 acres). Similarly, Portugal has seen a steep increase, with a total burned area of around 270,000 hectares (about 667,700 acres) this year.
In parallel with the wildfire crisis, the continent’s carbon dioxide emissions have also risen to 38 million tons, highlighting the environmental impact of the fires. The ongoing blazes have been exacerbated by the heatwave, which has created ideal conditions for the fires to spread rapidly.
