Climate Change Linked to 2,300 European Heatwave Deaths, Scientists Warn
————————————-
A recent heatwave in early July may have caused 2,300 deaths across a dozen major European cities, with scientists attributing about 1,500 of these fatalities directly to human-caused climate change, Arab News reported. This rapid assessment aims to serve as an urgent warning, as climate change is making such extreme heat events more frequent and intense.
Friederike Otto, a climate scientist involved in the research, highlighted that despite heat being a “silent killer” often undercounted, society remains unprepared. The study, a swift attribution effort, found that global warming made the heatwave 1°C to 4°C hotter. While not yet peer-reviewed, the methodology is considered robust. Experts emphasize the study’s potential to boost public understanding and policy efforts to better prepare for future heatwaves.
