Pacific Nations on Alert After Powerful Quake Triggers Tsunami Warnings

Communities across the Pacific Ocean were placed on high alert Tuesday following an 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast, The Guardian reported. The quake, one of the strongest ever recorded, prompted tsunami warnings and precautionary evacuations in multiple countries.

In Guam, residents were urged to move inland and away from low-lying areas. Similar measures were taken in Hawaii, where tsunami sirens sounded on several islands. Authorities ordered evacuations and activated emergency centers, though the anticipated waves caused no significant damage.

Japan, still haunted by the 2011 tsunami, saw people evacuate to shelters in coastal cities like Kamaishi. In Hokkaido, residents gathered on rooftops while fishing boats moved to sea. Tragically, a 58-year-old woman died in Japan after her car fell from a cliff during evacuation.

Parts of Russia recorded waves up to four meters, while in Saipan and the Northern Mariana Islands, government offices and coastal businesses shut down. In Peru, authorities closed access to beaches, and coastal roads in Lima were temporarily blocked.

Although many tsunami alerts were later downgraded, the quake’s impact was felt across time zones, sparking temporary chaos and prompting large-scale evacuations. Emergency officials praised public cooperation and preparedness, noting the importance of readiness in a region vulnerable to seismic activity.
