Shanghai authorities have evacuated almost 283,000 residents as Typhoon Co-May approaches the bustling city, bringing with it intense rainfall and high winds, Arab News reported. State media reported the extensive evacuation efforts undertaken to ensure public safety.

State broadcaster CCTV confirmed on Wednesday that “from last night to 10:00 am today, 282,800 people have been evacuated and relocated, basically achieving the goal of evacuating all those who needed to be evacuated.”

More than 1,900 temporary shelters have been set up across the city, authorities said. The massive relocation highlights the city’s preparedness in the face of the impending typhoon, aiming to minimize potential casualties and damage from the severe weather event.
