Spain has recorded 1,180 heat-related deaths over the past two months amid an intense heatwave sweeping Western Europe, according to the Environment Ministry. Temperatures have repeatedly soared above 40°C (104°F), marking a sharp rise in fatalities compared to last year.

Most victims were women and people over 65. The hardest-hit areas include Galicia, La Rioja, Asturias, and Cantabria — regions in northern Spain where summers have traditionally been milder but have seen a marked increase in extreme temperatures in recent years.
