Heatwaves Threaten Global Dairy Production, Study Warns
……………………..

Rising heatwaves could severely impact global dairy production, researchers have warned. A study tracking over 130,000 cows for 12 years found that extreme heat can cut milk yields by up to 10%. Just one hour above a wet-bulb temperature of 26°C reduces daily milk output by 0.5%, with lingering effects lasting up to 10 days.

By 2050, worsening heat stress could lower average daily milk production by 4%, hitting the 150 million households reliant on dairy farming. South Asia, projected to drive over half of global milk growth in the next decade, faces heightened risks as the region becomes increasingly prone to extreme heat.

While many farmers use shading, ventilation, and sprinklers, these methods currently offset only 40% of heat stress impacts. Lead researcher Claire Palandri urged more robust measures, warning that added stressors like confinement make cattle even more vulnerable to heat.
