At least 15 Chadian soldiers died and 32 were wounded in clashes with Boko Haram fighters on Saturday, Reuters reported quoting a military spokesperson.
General Issakh Acheikh announced the figures on state television Sunday, also reporting 96 Boko Haram fighters killed and 11 others wounded, adding that weapons and equipment were seized but did not specify the location or circumstances of the confrontation.
The clashes are part of “Operation Haskanite,” a mission aimed at rooting out Boko Haram from the Lake Chad region, which has faced repeated attacks by groups such as Boko Haram and IS in West Africa. These insurgencies began in northeast Nigeria in 2009 and have since spread into Chad and neighboring areas.
Just last month, around 40 Chadian soldiers were killed in a Boko Haram attack on a military base in the same region, prompting interim President Mahamat Idriss Deby to consider withdrawing Chad from a multinational security force.
