Waterloo District School Board allows its Shia teachers to take vacation to perform Ziyarah at any time of the year

The Waterloo Region District School Board has become the first Canadian Public School Board in all of Canada to allow its Shia teachers (full-time or part-time) to take time off to perform Ziyarah at any time of the year without having to lose their position.

Previously, part-time teachers had to resign from their positions.

By Allah’s grace and with the help of Sister Malihe Elias, a teacher with the Waterloo Region District School Board, the board has changed its laws and now every Shia teacher can take a time off to visit the holy shrines without resigning from their job.

“No person should ever worry about choosing between their work or visiting Imam Hussein, peace be upon him,” says Elias.
