Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has extended Ramadan greetings to Muslims in Canada and around the world, marking the beginning of the holy month.
In a statement issued to coincide with the start of Ramadan, Carney said that as the sun sets, Muslims in Canada and globally begin observing a sacred period centered on reflection, spirituality, and community. He noted that Ramadan offers opportunities for families and friends to come together in homes and mosques for prayer and contemplation, concluding each day with the traditional iftar meal after fasting from dawn to sunset.
The prime minister described Ramadan as a time for gratitude and introspection, as well as a moment to celebrate shared spiritual and human values. He also addressed challenges faced by Muslim communities in Canada, stressing that Islamophobia remains a serious and painful issue that requires decisive action.
Carney emphasized that combating hatred and discrimination is a priority for his government, stating that Islamophobia has no place in Canada. He reaffirmed that core Canadian values are rooted in the fundamental rights of all individuals to freedom, security, and dignity, underscoring that these principles must be upheld without compromise.
In closing, the prime minister called for collective efforts to build an inclusive society in which Muslims can live safely and with pride, free from fear or intimidation. He wished Muslims in Canada and worldwide a peaceful and blessed Ramadan, expressing hope that the month would bring tranquility and well-being to communities observing the holy period.
