Canadian Muslim Group Urges Action After Quebec Uber Driver Threatened

A Muslim advocacy organization in Canada has renewed calls for stronger action against Islamophobia following an incident in Quebec in which a Muslim Uber driver was allegedly threatened with a knife by a passenger. The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) said the incident reflects a troubling rise in anti-Muslim hostility and warned that inflammatory political and media rhetoric has contributed to an environment in which such attacks can occur.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, the organization urged authorities and political leaders to respond decisively and publicly condemn hate-motivated violence.
According to details provided by the NCCM, the incident took place on December 6, when a passenger reportedly asked the driver about his religious beliefs before threatening him with a knife. A second passenger intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.

The council said the case is part of a broader pattern of threats targeting Muslims in Quebec.
Montreal police confirmed that a 39-year-old driver reported being threatened with a sharp object by a passenger. The case has been referred to the hate crimes unit, and investigations are ongoing. Police said no arrests have been made so far, and efforts to locate the suspect and a key witness continue.

Speaking to CBC News, NCCM chief executive Stephen Brown said the incident highlights growing safety concerns among Muslim communities and stressed the need for preventive measures to stop hate-driven violence before it escalates. The incident has intensified calls from community groups for stronger policies to address Islamophobia and protect individuals from attacks based on religious identity.
