Canadian Federal Offices Urged to Adjust Breaks in Respect of Ramadan
…………

Canadian federal institutions have issued guidance encouraging staff in Ottawa’s IT departments to pause coffee breaks during Ramadan as a gesture of consideration toward fasting Muslim employees. The recommendations, shared internally, emphasized that fasting is a significant spiritual practice and that workplaces should avoid placing observant employees in uncomfortable situations during the workday.

The guidance also suggested adjusting meeting schedules and afternoon break times, while allowing flexibility around prayer, suhoor and iftar needs. The move follows concerns raised by some Muslim staff who said their religious identity received less institutional support compared with other priorities within federal offices. The message described Ramadan as a sacred month and stressed the importance of fostering an inclusive environment amid rising anti-Muslim sentiment in some communities.
