Hate-Motivated Vandalism at Mississauga Islamic Centre Highlights Rising Islamophobia in Canada

A suspected hate-motivated attack at an Islamic centre in Mississauga, Ontario, has raised alarm among Canada’s Muslim community, reflecting a broader surge in Islamophobia nationwide, IQNA reported.
On August 15, surveillance footage captured a man arriving on a skateboard and smashing the glass doors of the centre in an early-morning incident.
Peel Regional Police confirmed that their hate crime unit is leading the investigation, classifying it as a potential faith-based offence. Sgt. Tyler Bell noted that while the suspect is visible on video, identification remains challenging, and the investigation’s outcome will guide appropriate charges. Police indicated that the case is being treated as “hate-motivated mischief” at minimum.
The centre’s president told OMNI News that the suspect had previously approached the location, sometimes greeting people amicably, which makes the sudden attack particularly alarming. Community members have expressed heightened anxiety, with decreased attendance at daily Quran classes and evening schools due to fear.
The incident occurs amid a rising pattern of anti-Muslim hate crimes in Canada. According to York University’s Islamophobia Research Hub, reports of attacks targeting Muslims, Palestinians, and Arabs have sharply increased since October 7, 2023, when Israel’s military operations in Gaza escalated. Toronto police alone recorded a 1,600 percent increase in related hate crimes within six weeks of the conflict’s outbreak.
Statistics Canada also reported a 94 percent rise in anti-Muslim hate crimes in 2023 and a 52 percent increase in offenses against Arabs and West Asians. Civil society groups have highlighted wider impacts, including job losses linked to pro-Palestinian expression and numerous human rights complaints, demonstrating the profound effects on daily life and personal security for many Canadians.
