Afghans in Toronto Protest Hazara Killings, Demand Genocide Recognition
On September 22, a rally in Toronto saw a gathering of Afghan protesters demanding recognition of the “Hazara genocide” following recent killings in Afghanistan, Khaama Press reported yesterday.
The protest was sparked by the killing of at least 14 Hazaras in Daikundi by ISIS. Speakers, including the Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Canadian Parliament, acknowledged the atrocities faced by the Hazara community.
A resolution presented by protesters highlighted that since 2001, over 294 incidents targeting Hazaras have resulted in more than 2,228 deaths and 2,837 injuries. The situation has worsened since the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021, with over 30 major assaults reported.
Protesters condemned systematic attacks on Hazaras in various settings and urged Canada and the international community to take action. They called for an independent United Nations investigation into human rights violations and emphasized the need for accountability to prevent further atrocities.
