A pig’s head was discovered among graves at a Muslim cemetery in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina, leading to the cancellation of a memorial ceremony and renewed concerns over ethnic and religious tensions ahead of the country’s upcoming elections.

The incident occurred on Monday when Bosnian Muslims arrived at the cemetery in a Croat-majority area of Mostar to commemorate the anniversary of a Bosnian army brigade formed during the 1992–1995 war. Organizers canceled the event after finding the animal remains, which are considered offensive in Islam.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Mostar Mayor Mario Kordić condemned the act, describing it as a serious violation of the cemetery, while Bosniak lawmaker Sanel Kajan said the site had previously been targeted by graffiti and vandalism.

The incident comes amid continued ethnic tensions in Bosnia and Herzegovina more than three decades after the war, which killed nearly 100,000 people. Relations between Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats remain sensitive, with authorities warning that nationalist incidents often increase during election periods.
