Muslims in the village of Gornja Bijenja near Nevesinje in Bosnia and Herzegovina have inaugurated a new mosque following a 10-month construction period, marking a significant milestone for the local community.
Around 40 worshippers attended the first congregational prayer, led by Imam Mohammad bin Abdulaziz Choubil. The mosque has now been added to the network of official Islamic facilities in the Nevesinje area and is expected to host regular prayers and community activities.
Construction of the mosque began on April 16, 2025, with the foundation stone laid by Mostar Mufti Salem Dedovic. The project was largely funded through community donations, with significant contributions from local benefactors and residents.
Organizers said the project’s rapid completion reflected strong unity among community members, many of whom currently live in Mostar and returned on weekends to assist with construction and finishing work.
The total cost of the mosque reached approximately 180,000 Bosnian marks, including donations, services, and volunteer labor. More than 300 donors contributed to the project, with one major donation amounting to 40,000 marks, along with the land on which the mosque was built.
Although some facilities, such as ablution areas and interior furnishings, are still under development, the mosque has already been in use since the beginning of Ramadan, hosting nightly Taraweeh prayers.
Community leaders expressed hope that the mosque will serve as a center for social and religious activities, helping to strengthen local ties and encourage visitors to the village. Further construction work is expected to continue after Eid al-Fitr.
