Kosovo’s Islamic Community Marks 30th Anniversary of Srebrenica Massacre
……………
The Islamic Community of Kosovo has commemorated the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre with a series of cultural and religious events in Pristina. The remembrance included the release of a special issue of the Islamic Education journal, featuring academic and religious essays as well as first-hand testimonies. The edition also highlighted the book Witness to Srebrenica by Bosnian imam Mevludin Hrnjic, which documents the account of a survivor.
The commemoration coincided with three decades since the killing of more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys in July 1995 by Bosnian Serb forces in a UN-designated safe area. The Kosovo Islamic Community welcomed the recent United Nations resolution officially recognizing the atrocity as genocide, describing it as a belated yet historically significant step.
On July 11, Kosovo’s Grand Mufti Naim Tërnava led a delegation to the central memorial event in Potočari, Srebrenica, alongside global religious and political figures. The community emphasized that remembrance is essential to justice, truth, and reconciliation.
