Rohingya Refugees in India Face Hardship Amid Lack of Legal Recognition

Thousands of Rohingya refugees in India continue to face severe economic and social challenges due to the absence of formal legal recognition, according to reports from Muslim Network TV and independent Indian media.

India hosts an estimated 40,000 Rohingya refugees who fled persecution in Myanmar and now live in informal settlements in cities including New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Jammu. Without official refugee status, these individuals are largely excluded from formal employment, banking, and other social services.

Rohingya residents rely on UNHCR-issued identification, which is not widely accepted by Indian employers or financial institutions. Many are forced into informal labor, including construction, scrap collection, and street vending, often receiving irregular pay and facing exploitation. Several refugees reported being denied wages after employers learned of their undocumented status.

“The lack of government-recognized documents makes finding stable work nearly impossible,” said Amina Khatoon, a Rohingya mother of three who has lived in India for over a decade.

The situation is compounded by the risk of detention or deportation, as authorities have reportedly arrested refugees despite holding UN-issued documents. Experts note that legal uncertainty discourages Rohingya families from investing in businesses or long-term livelihoods, trapping them in cycles of poverty and informal labor.

Human rights advocates urge India to establish protections for stateless refugees, warning that continued exclusion leaves the Rohingya highly vulnerable to exploitation and economic marginalization.
