Study reveals sexual harassment rampant in Rohingya camps

A recent study by ActionAid reveals widespread sexual harassment and violence against Rohingya women and adolescents in Bangladesh’s Cox’s Bazar refugee camps, Arab News reported. Home to about one million Rohingyas fleeing Myanmar’s military crackdown in Rakhine state, the camps face severe humanitarian challenges.

ActionAid conducted 66 in-depth interviews highlighting that sexual harassment is the most urgent issue. Women and girls, especially those aged 6 to 15, are vulnerable to molestation, rape, trafficking, poverty, educational exclusion, and even death. Incidents frequently occur near latrines, bathing areas, distribution centers, hospitals, schools, and even relatives’ homes.

The study notes that abuses are committed not only by men known to families but also allegedly by members of the Armed Police Battalion (APBN), deployed by Bangladesh’s government. However, APBN officials deny such allegations.

Patriarchal norms deeply affect the community, with early marriage and polygamy normalized. Most victims lack access to legal assistance. Women call for better public lighting, replacement of APBN officers with army personnel, male engagement in prevention, and expanded education and livelihood opportunities.

Since early 2024, Bangladesh has seen a new influx of 150,000 Rohingya refugees.
