MSF Urges Global Action for Lasting Rohingya Crisis Solution
……………….
On the eighth anniversary of the mass displacement of the Rohingya people from Myanmar, Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) has urged the international community and donor governments to take urgent, long-term action to resolve the crisis.
François Hajj, MSF’s head of mission in Bangladesh, emphasized that the occasion is not a time for commemoration, but a stark reminder of global failure to secure a sustainable solution. He warned that severe cuts to humanitarian aid are worsening the plight of Rohingya refugees and increasing their vulnerability to abuse.
Hajj stressed that the Rohingya deserve more than survival, calling for a strategic shift beyond temporary aid and containment policies. He advocated for durable solutions that uphold their rights and dignity.
Over 1.3 million Rohingya refugees currently reside in overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, facing limited access to healthcare, education, and protection—conditions particularly dire for women and children.
The crisis began on August 25, 2017, following a military crackdown in Myanmar, which the UN described as ethnic cleansing and genocide. More than 700,000 fled violence, and most remain stateless, with no clear path to safe return or resettlement.
