Bengali Muslims, Even with Valid Documents, Face Arrest in Gurugram Police Campaign

Bengali Muslims, Even with Valid Documents, Face Arrest in Gurugram Police Campaign
———————————-
Rights groups have called on the Haryana government to halt arbitrary detentions and implement fair verification procedures following reports of Bengali Muslims being arrested in Gurugram despite holding valid Indian identification documents, Clarion India reported.

This crackdown follows directives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government targeting illegal Bangladeshi nationals, but activists say it disproportionately affects Indian Muslims, especially Bengali speakers in BJP-ruled states like Haryana. Families report frequent police raids demanding identity papers and detaining individuals despite valid documents.

Social workers and lawyers condemn the actions as harassment and wrongful targeting of citizens based on language and religion. They urge authorities to adopt lawful and just approaches rather than arbitrary arrests. The incident has intensified concerns about discriminatory “bulldozer and detention” policies that marginalize Muslim communities in India.
