Opposition Slams Assam Government Over Vigilante Drives
—————————-
Opposition parties in Assam are accusing the state government of a “total law and order collapse” due to vigilante campaigns targeting Bengali Muslims in Upper Assam, according to a report from Maktoob Media. These campaigns, which are being led by Assamese nationalist groups, are being referred to as the “miya kheda andolan” and are labeling Bengali Muslims as “suspected Bangladeshis.”
The opposition argues that these vigilante drives are occurring after a series of government-led eviction drives and following comments from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about the need to “stem the demographic invasion” of Upper Assam.
Former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee President Ripun Bora accused the government of “fueling mob violence” and failing to take action against the “antisocial activities.” Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi warned that the situation could “spiral out of control” and accused the groups of stirring communal conflict for political gain. A delegation from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) met with police officials to demand intervention, stating that these actions are “illegal, unconstitutional, and a serious threat to law and order.”
