A Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed into a school in Dhaka on Monday, killing at least 20 people and injuring 171 others in what officials have called the country’s worst aviation disaster in recent memory, the CNN reported.

The F-7 fighter jet went down around 1:18 p.m. local time, striking Milestone School and College in the Diabari area of northern Dhaka. According to the Bangladesh Armed Forces, the aircraft experienced a mechanical failure while flying over a densely populated area. The pilot, who was among the dead, reportedly tried to divert the jet to a less populated location before impact.

Most of the injured are students, many suffering severe burns, and are being treated at various hospitals across the capital. Emergency services responded quickly, battling flames and searching for survivors among the wreckage.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash. The government declared a day of mourning and called for special prayers.

Interim leader Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow and urged hospitals to prioritize care for the victims. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud explosion followed by smoke and flames engulfing the school. Condolences have poured in from neighboring countries, including India and Pakistan, in support of Bangladesh.
