A Bangladesh court has indicted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in absentia, along with two close aides, for crimes against humanity linked to the July 2024 uprising that led to her government’s fall, Anadolu Agency reported. The International Crimes Tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Mazumder, ordered charges against Hasina, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, and ex-Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.

The tribunal began proceedings in June, accusing Hasina of ordering state forces to use lethal force during the protests, which resulted in up to 1,400 deaths, including children, according to a UN human rights report. Hasina and Khan are reportedly in India, while Mamun remains in custody and has admitted involvement, now serving as a prosecution witness.

Hasina’s government was ousted on August 5, 2024, and Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus formed a transitional government requesting her return for trial. India has not yet responded to this request. Yunus recently announced elections will take place in April 2026. The indictment intensifies calls for Hasina’s deportation to Bangladesh to face justice.
