Pushback of Bengali-speaking Muslims Condemned as ‘Communal Targeting’

Allegations of arbitrary detention and illegal deportation of Bengali-speaking Muslims have sparked strong condemnation from political and human rights groups, India Clarion reported. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and West Bengal-based human rights organization MASUM have accused authorities, particularly in BJP-ruled states, of targeting minorities under the pretext of national security.

Following the Pahalgam terror attack, joint operations by police and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have reportedly detained and deported suspected illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, many of whom are Bengali-speaking Muslims. CPI(M) claims that even genuine Indian citizens and those awaiting legal appeals are being pushed back without due process.

MASUM highlighted that detainees are often arrested without warrants, blindfolded, and handed over to BSF for illegal deportation, denying them legal protection. Both groups assert these actions reflect communal profiling and collective punishment, intensified by recent government posturing against Pakistan.

CPI(M) also criticized Assam’s decision to arm “indigenous people,” warning of communal consequences. Both organizations have called for an immediate halt and independent judicial inquiry. The government has yet to respond.
