Bangladesh Gears Up for First Election Since Hasina Ouster with Mass Political Rallies

Bangladesh has launched three days of mass political rallies as the country prepares for its first election following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last year, Arab News reported. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus since August 2024, is implementing reforms and aims to hold elections by the end of 2025 or early 2026.
Thousands gathered in Dhaka on May Day at a rally organized by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which emphasized the importance of free and fair elections after previous polls were marred by alleged fraud.
Other parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, the National Citizens Party formed by student protest leaders, and Hefazat-e-Islam, are also holding rallies. The interim government stresses the need for reforms in state institutions to prevent authoritarianism and ensure a democratic transition in Bangladesh’s upcoming elections.
