Bangladesh to Hold Elections in Late 2025 or Early 2026
Bangladesh’s interim leader, Muhammad Yunus, announced that general elections are expected to take place in late 2025 or early 2026, Arab News reported. Yunus, appointed as the chief adviser after the August revolution that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, faces mounting pressure to establish a timeline for the elections.
In a state television broadcast, the 84-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate emphasized the need for electoral reforms before setting an election date. He stated that if political parties agree to minimal reforms, such as a flawless voter list, elections could be held by the end of November 2025. However, comprehensive reforms may delay the polls by several months.
Hasina, who fled to India during the uprising, faced accusations of human rights abuses and undermining democratic processes during her 15-year rule. Yunus has initiated commissions to implement necessary reforms aimed at restoring democratic institutions in the country of approximately 170 million people.
