Dengue Deaths Surge in Bangladesh Amid Changing Disease Patterns

Bangladesh is grappling with a rising dengue death toll, reporting 80 fatalities in September alone, accounting for nearly half of the 166 deaths this year. Over 32,000 dengue-related hospitalizations have been recorded in 2024, with more than 18,000 occurring last month. Experts warn of a worsening situation as patients often arrive at hospitals in critical condition, significantly hindering recovery efforts.

Dr. Abu Hussain Md. Moinul Ahsan from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) noted that timely medical intervention is crucial, as many patients come late. Medicine specialist Dr. ABM Abdullah highlighted that second or third infections lead to higher fatalities.

Entomologist Kabirul Bashar emphasized the need for revised mosquito control strategies, as Aedes mosquitoes can breed in stagnant water and bite at all hours. Despite local government efforts, the fight against dengue remains challenging in the face of evolving symptoms and behaviors of the disease. In 2023, Bangladesh recorded a staggering 1,705 dengue deaths.
