Millions of Kids at Risk Following Devastating Floods in Bangladesh
Severe flooding in Bangladesh, triggered by monsoon rains, has left millions of children in need of humanitarian assistance, rliefweb.com reported yesterday. Approximately 4.9 million people are stranded, with 18 reported fatalities as of Sunday. The hardest-hit districts include Feni, Moulvibazar, and Chittagong, as five major rivers exceed danger levels.
Plan International Bangladesh is providing support to families forced to evacuate. Kabita Bose, Country Director, stated that entire communities are inundated, with millions requiring safe shelter and lifesaving aid. Currently, 11 districts are impacted, affecting around 1 million families.
There are 3,527 flood shelters accommodating 284,888 individuals, including 1.54 million children and adolescents. Damage to flood control dams and lack of early warning systems have worsened the situation. Plan International is deploying emergency teams and has allocated contingency funding, appealing for 4 million EUR to support relief efforts.
