Muhammad Yunus Sworn in as Head of Bangladesh’s Interim Government Amidst Political Turmoil
In a significant political shift, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was sworn in as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government on Thursday, following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid widespread protests. The unrest, fueled by student demonstrations over job quotas, escalated into a broader uprising against Hasina’s increasingly autocratic 15-year rule, prompting her to flee to India.
Yunus took the oath of office in a ceremony led by figurehead President Mohammed Shahabuddin, attended by diplomats, civil society leaders, and former opposition members, but notably absent were representatives from Hasina’s party. The newly formed Cabinet, comprising 16 members primarily from civil society, includes two leaders from the student protests.
Yunus now faces the critical tasks of restoring peace and preparing for upcoming elections in the wake of the political upheaval.
