Bangladesh Enforces Nationwide Curfew Amid Escalating Protests
The Bangladesh military has imposed an indefinite nationwide curfew following renewed protests demanding Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, Arab News reported yesterday.
Thousands of demonstrators, led by student groups, took to the streets in Dhaka over the weekend, reigniting a civil disobedience campaign after a violent crackdown in July that resulted in over 200 deaths. The Interior Ministry announced the curfew on Sunday, coinciding with a renewed internet blackout.
At least 91 people, including 14 police officers, have been killed in the latest clashes, with reports indicating more than 50 fatalities. Police used tear gas and stun grenades against protesters, while the ruling Awami League claimed the movement has been politicized, asserting law enforcement is exercising maximum tolerance.
Retired military officers urged the armed forces to avoid confrontation with civilians and called for a UN investigation into the violence. Despite Hasina’s calls for dialogue and promises of justice, protesters have rejected negotiations, intensifying the unrest across the nation.
