UN Secretary-General Alarmed by Violence in Bangladesh Student Protests

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed deep concern over reports of human rights violations and excessive force used by security forces during ongoing student protests in Bangladesh, TRTWorld reported yesterday.

These protests, sparked by government job reforms, have reportedly resulted in at least 266 deaths, according to independent sources, with thousands more injured. The Bangladesh Home Ministry, however, claims the death toll stands at 150.

In the past 12 days, over 10,000 individuals have been arrested, as curfews remain in effect since July 20. Guterres’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, emphasized the importance of respecting human rights, due process, and the right to peaceful assembly.

The UN has called for calm, urging investigations into violence and accountability for those responsible. The situation continues to escalate, with protests resuming in Dhaka despite the ongoing curfew.
