Bangladesh Student Protests Erupt Against Authoritarian Rule

Student protests in Bangladesh have escalated into a significant movement against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s government, sparked by outrage over the reintroduction of job quotas for descendants of war veterans, The Guardian published in an article on July 27.

Initially peaceful, the demonstrations turned violent as state forces responded with lethal measures, resulting in over 200 deaths and thousands injured.

Witnesses reported brutal crackdowns, including live ammunition and coordinated attacks by pro-government groups. Despite a court ruling that reduced the quotas, the protests have evolved into a broader demand for political change, highlighting Hasina’s increasingly authoritarian rule.

While student leaders have temporarily suspended protests to seek justice for victims, further actions are expected as public discontent grows. An indefinite government-imposed curfew has worsened economic hardships, fueling protesters’ resolve.

The protesters say “This is not finished yet,” signaling a critical moment in Bangladesh’s struggle for democracy and accountability.
