Bangladesh’s Supreme Court Reduces Controversial Job Quota Amid Protests

On Sunday, Bangladesh’s Supreme Court partially addressed ongoing student protests by reducing a contentious government job quota for veterans from 30% to 5%, the Associated Press reported yesterday.

This decision follows violent clashes that have resulted in numerous fatalities and widespread unrest across the nation. Students have long criticized the quota system, arguing it limits opportunities for qualified applicants, and have called for a merit-based approach.

The ruling comes after the High Court reinstated the quotas in June, prompting renewed protests. The court’s recent verdict allocates 93% of jobs based on merit, with the remaining 2% reserved for ethnic minorities and disabled individuals.

In response to the protests, the government has imposed a stay-at-home order and declared public holidays. Student leaders view it as a significant step toward reforming a problematic system that they believe favors political allies of the ruling party.
