Students in Bangladesh Protest Quota System, Disrupt Traffic
Students in Bangladesh have resumed “Bangla blockade” protests, causing traffic disruption for the 4th consecutive day. The demonstrators are demanding reforms to the government’s jobs policy, which currently offers a 56% quota system, Anadolu Agency reported yesterday.
The protesters argue the quota is “discriminatory” and are calling for a merit-based recruitment process. They have proposed a 5% quota for marginalized populations.
The apex court has asked parties to maintain status quo for four weeks, staying a previous order reinstating a 30% quota for war families. However, protesters say the court’s directive is irrelevant, as they seek quota system reformation, not repeal.
The protests have caused public suffering, with limited transport available. The government has warned of legal action if roads are blocked.
Analysts explain students believe the quota system is unconstitutional, hindering employment as the private sector shrinks. The constitution gives the government authority over quotas, not the courts.
