Devastating Floods Displace 40,000 in Northern Bangladesh, Disrupts Schools

Severe flooding in northern Bangladesh has displaced an estimated 40,000 people and forced the closure of schools, Reuters reported citing the country’s disaster and relief ministry.

The flooding has swept away homes, broken bridges and dams, and left villagers wading through knee-deep water.

The situation is expected to worsen in the coming days, with the local meteorological office forecasting more heavy rain for the central and southern regions. The swollen Brahmaputra river, however, is expected to recede in the next few days.

The disaster has prompted the formation of more than 600 medical teams to treat flood victims, and the government has set up shelters to accommodate the displaced.

Over 2 million people have been affected by the floods in Assam.
