Bangladesh: Grameen Bank officially announces dismissal of Nobel laureate Yunus

Nobel peace laureate Muhammad Yunus has been ousted from two businesses he founded by a Bangladesh bank, following his conviction in a criminal case that his supporters claim was politically motivated.

The 83-year-old is known for establishing Grameen Bank, which has helped alleviate poverty for millions but has faced criticism from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Yunus has denied the charges against him and is facing more than 100 other charges over alleged labor law violations and graft.

It should be mentioned that Yunus’s popularity among the Bangladeshis has for years earmarked him as a potential rival to Hasina, who won a fifth term in office last month.
